If you've ever scrambled to enter a last-minute order at a market table or needed to log a sale after pickup day, you know how important it is for that process to be quick and flexible. At Local Line, we’ve been listening closely to how you use Log Order, and we’ve made a series of enhancements designed to save you time, reduce friction, and make order entry a whole lot easier.

These updates are especially helpful for farmers and food hubs who sell in person, take call-in orders, or log orders on behalf of customers.

Here’s what’s new and why it matters for your workflow.

New Log Order and POS Workflow Improvements

Barcode Scanner Support

Speed is everything when you’re making back-to-back sales. With new barcode scanner support, you can now scan products and boxes directly into orders. This eliminates the need to search or scroll through your catalog, helping you process orders faster and with fewer mistakes.

👉 Getting set up with barcode scanning is easy. Simply add your barcode numbers as package codes for all your relevant products. If you haven’t generated codes yet, you can export barcodes in the Products table.

Guest Checkout

Not every sale needs to be tied to a customer. Sometimes, you just want to log a one-time order. Now, you can log orders without being required to select or create a customer, making it easier to handle quick transactions like cash sales at the market.

Set Default Payment and Fulfillment Methods by Price List

To save you clicks, we’ve added the ability to set default payment and fulfillment methods for each price list. If you have a price list just for your farm stand, for example, you can automatically load it with "Credit Card" and "Farm Pickup" selected when logging an order. These defaults keep your sales consistent and make logging repetitive orders even quicker.

Add a Customer Without Leaving the Screen

When you're entering an order for a new customer, the last thing you want is to be redirected to another screen. Now, you can add a customer directly from the Log Order screen without any interruptions. This makes it easier to capture new customer info on the spot and follow up later if needed.

Add Customer Notes With the "About This Customer" Field

Keeping internal notes on your customers, like preferred pickup times or special requests, just got more useful. You can now view the "About this customer" notes directly in the Log Order screen. These notes are editable under the customer profile and are a great way to keep your team informed about returning customers. Customer notes are only visible to you and your team and will also be visible on order exports.

Improved Flow for Keyboard Users

Small changes can make a big difference when you’re logging lots of orders. We’ve improved tabbing through fields and made sure the cursor is automatically placed in the right field when you land on the screen, ready to type. Whether you’re adding a new customer or manually searching for a product, the flow is faster and smoother.

Add Custom Items On the Fly

Sometimes you sell something that’s not in your product catalog–a bag or crate, a one-off item, or a service. Now, you can add custom items directly during the order logging process. This gives you flexibility without needing to set up a new product each time.

How Melvin’s Farm to Fork Uses Local Line to Power In-Person Sales

At Melvin’s Farm to Fork, running a bustling farm store with nearly 50 local vendors requires more than just a good product–it demands a system that keeps everything organized, efficient, and easy to use. That’s where Local Line comes in. While Gayle originally sought out the platform to help manage online orders and inventory, she quickly found that it also transformed how they handled in-person sales.

Today, Local Line functions as their point-of-sale system. Every sale–whether it’s a pound of pasture-raised beef, a dozen eggs, or a local specialty product–gets logged through the same system that powers their online store.

“Local Line works as our Point of Sale system,” Gayle explains. “When someone comes into the store, we search their profile in Local Line, log the order, and have them pay–whether by cash, card, or another method. It’s all right there, and it keeps our inventory in sync across the board.”

This seamless experience is especially important given the scale and diversity of their product offering. With so many vendors and fast-moving inventory, Gayle and her team rely on Local Line to make sure their stock is up to date and their records are accurate.

“We sell everything from beef and pork to trout and cheese curds from a neighboring county,” she says. “Being able to track those sales and manage inventory in real time has saved us hours of work and headaches.”

By using Local Line for both online and in-person orders, Gayle has built a system that gives her full visibility into sales trends, customer behavior, and inventory flow, all without the need for multiple tools or clunky spreadsheets. It also makes it easier to serve customers the way they prefer to shop, whether that’s online from home or face-to-face at the farm store.

“It keeps us organized, even during our busiest times,” Gayle adds. “We don’t have to worry about missing items or having mismatched numbers at the end of the week. Everything just works.”

In-person sales with Local Line have never been easier

These new features are designed to support the way you sell–whether that’s online, in person, or both. By reducing the number of clicks, speeding up data entry, and giving you more flexibility with customers and payments, we hope these improvements free you up to focus on what matters most: serving your customers and running your business.

We’re excited for you to try out the new and improved Log Order experience. If you have feedback or questions, our team is always here to help.
